Living From Identity Instead of Performance
Are We Ever Enough?
Many of us spend our lives trying to prove something.
We work harder, achieve more, and compare ourselves with others, hoping that one more accomplishment, one more promotion, or one more success will finally make us feel enough.
Yet the finish line keeps moving.
Performance can earn recognition, but it can never give us lasting identity.
Perhaps that is why so many people feel exhausted. We were never meant to carry the weight of proving our worth every single day.
Identity Comes Before Achievement
One of the most beautiful truths in Scripture is that our identity is received before it is achieved.
Before Jesus began His public ministry, before He performed miracles or taught the crowds, the Father declared, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." (Mark 1:11)
Approval came before performance.
I find this deeply encouraging because it reveals something about the heart of God. Our value is not something we earn. It is something we are invited to receive.
Even if you are still exploring faith, there is wisdom here for all of us. A life built only on achievement will always leave us chasing the next success. A life rooted in identity allows us to work from a place of security rather than striving.
Becoming Who We Were Created to Be
This understanding shapes much of my work as an artist.
The women who appear in my paintings are not portraits of perfection. They represent a journey of becoming. The flowers, crowns, and light are symbols of growth, dignity, and the beauty that emerges when we begin to live from who we truly are instead of who we think we must become.
To me, identity is not about creating a better version of ourselves.
It is about discovering the person we were created to be.
A Different Way to Live
Imagine beginning each day not by asking, "What do I need to prove today?" but instead asking, "Who am I becoming?"
The first question is driven by fear.
The second is shaped by hope.
When we live from identity rather than performance, success becomes something we can enjoy instead of something we desperately need. We become free to create, to love, to serve, and to rest without constantly measuring our worth.
A Quiet Invitation
Perhaps today you can lay down, even for a moment, the pressure to prove yourself.
Your value has never depended on how much you achieve.
The strongest trees do not struggle to convince anyone that they belong in the forest.
They simply grow according to the life that is already within them.
May you find the freedom to do the same.
